The Vindhella is the best well known section of the King's Road and a famous engineering feat. But the Vindhella mountain pass hides stories of military power, slavery, rebel kings and battles - and maybe the secret behind the stave church.
Every day at 1:30 p.m. a King's Road guide is ready to take you up the east side of Vindhella and to the top of the famous hairpin turns.
On the way, you will learn about the King's Road and about the construction of the masterpiece that meanders on high walls down through the mountain pass. Hear about the road workers, about slave labor and punishment, about railings and stones, colors and rebel kings.
See also why the Vindhella mountain pass must have been the narrowest passage between east and west in ancient times and therefore probably a strategic control point. Here is a hill fort, ancient defense facilities, and the site for an ambush by the medieval rebel army «Birkebeinerne».
After a while at the hairpin turns at the top, the guide turns and goes back to the stave church. You can join, or you can go down to Rimskjold on your own or take the round trip across Sverrestigen back to the church. The guide helps you with the directions.
